Vaksmriti – Language as Is (2025): Handcrafted Papier-Mâché Elephant Sculpture

“Speech-Memory” — a fusion of vāk (language/voice) and smṛti (memory).

The elephant is associated with ritual, storytelling, and movement across land—a walking archive.
The elephant is language in its deepest form: memory before speech. The shankh is the breath of
language — the call that awakens expression. Language lives between memory (elephant) and voice
(shankh). Language is the thread that connects the elephant’s memory to the conch’s call.It is
ancestral, sacred, and embodied. It honours the shankh’s breath and the elephant’s memory as two
pillars of language.
